The state was carved out of Sokoto state, which formed part of the former Northwestern state. In the new democratic dispensation in Nigeria, Zamafara was the first state in Nigeria to declare the controversial Sharia law. Agriculture is the main occupation of the people, mainly, livestock rearing. however, weaving, dyeing, blacksmith, carving, and leather works are part of the economy. Food crops grown in the state include, Millet, guinea corn, maize, potatoes, beans and vegetables. Minerals found in the state are, Phosphate and gold.
